The use of vegetables, roots and other natural items to make dyes has been known for many thousand years. Natural dyes are obtained from plants, berries and trees. Today synthetic dyes are available in many shades. However they do not have the luster and beauty of natural dyes that radiate more over the years.

Some of the natural dyes that are characteristics to turkish rugs include madder red, dyes woad ( blue), Chamomile ( bright yellow ) , walnut tree, pomegranate tree, buckthorn ( deep yellow), bast hemp ( brilliant yellow) , sage (yellow) and wild chamomile.
